From fragile breezy melodies to captivating and propulsive free jazz and wide open improvisations BUDDY is the debut recording from the Raymond MacDonald International Big Band and is a significant marker in the leader’s progression as a composer for, and leader of, improvising big bands. The recording comprises of eight tracks and while unmistakably respectful of the jazz tradition it present a unique and innovative approach to big band improvisation. A regular collaborator with many of the current pioneers in international avant-garde music and BUDDY is the result of such an international collaboration. Recorded at Live House Buddy, Tokyo, in August 2008, it features an outstanding international line-up including some of japan’s most respected improvisation musicians - for example the virtuosic pianist Satoko Fujii with prog rock icon Tatsuya Yoshida, genre busting Michiyo Yagi and the inspirationally inventive Natsuki Tamura. The CD also features Award winning Australian pianist Alister Spence, The Necks’ bassist Lloyd Swanton and ex-Sonic Youth guitarist Jim O’Rourke
Raymond MacDonald is increasingly active on the international stage and is a key player within a resurgent Scottish improvised music scene.
'MacDonald marshals the large ensemble through swelling tides of emotional intensity, at times approaching the explosive intensity of Peter Brotzmann's Chicago Tentet... it's an unqualified success.'
